Your Guide to the New Refrigerant Mandate

Effective January 1, 2025, the HVAC industry experienced a significant shift: equipment using older refrigerants like R22 and R410a is no longer being manufactured. This change stems from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s regulations to reduce global warming. The new refrigerants, A2L (R32 and R454B), have a much lower Global Warming Potential (GWP), which aligns with efforts like the 1987 Montreal Protocol to phase out harmful ozone-depleting substances.

Over the years, the HVAC industry has transitioned from CFCs (R12) to HCFCs (R22) and then to HFCs (R410a). While R410a served as a less harmful alternative to CFCs and HCFCs, it’s now time for another upgrade to refrigerants with a lower environmental impact—despite their slightly higher flammability.

Addressing Concerns About A2L Refrigerants

With any new technology, questions and concerns arise. Here’s what you need to know about A2L refrigerants:

  • Flammability: A2L refrigerants are classified as low flammability and low toxicity. New systems include sensors to detect leaks and automatically shut down the equipment to prevent sparks and combustion. This built-in safety measure is designed to protect your home and the environment.
  • Leaks and Maintenance: Modern HVAC systems are more efficient but tend to have thinner refrigerant tubing, increasing the potential for leaks. The required sensors enhance safety and encourage timely repairs, reducing the environmental impact of leaking refrigerants.
  • System Compatibility: Because of the sensors and regulatory requirements that are unique to A2L systems, current HVAC systems that use R22 or R410a can’t be retrofitted to accommodate A2L refrigerants.

What This Transition Means for Homeowners

If you own an HVAC system, here’s how the transition to A2L refrigerants could affect you.

Key Deadlines

  • On January 1, 2025, manufacturers were required to stop making equipment using R410a.
  • Installation of these systems will be allowed until January 1, 2026.
  • R410a refrigerant will still be produced until 2037, though availability may decrease as the cutoff date nears.

Chief Considerations

  • Maintenance Matters: If your system uses R410a, consider scheduling routine maintenance now to keep your existing system in peak condition. Repairs and replacement parts are still readily available, and proper care can extend the life of your equipment during this transitional period.
  • End-of-Life Equipment: If your current system is nearing the end of its life, evaluate your options carefully and don’t feel pressured to rush. While it’s tempting to upgrade immediately, waiting until more is known about A2L systems could save you money and frustration.
