As we say goodbye to 2024, we’re taking a look back at the top HVAC problems San Antonio homeowners faced this year. From leaking water to loud noises, these common issues had our phones ringing month after month. But don’t worry—most of these problems can be handled with a little knowledge and the right approach. Let’s dive in!
1. Water Leaking
Your HVAC system should never leak water. If you see water dripping from an overflow drain—typically located in inconvenient spots like above your front door or in front of a window—it’s a sign your primary drain line is clogged. The overflow drain is often mistaken for another primary drain line, but if water is leaking from it, it’s a warning sign that your system requires immediate attention.
What you can do:
- Check if the primary drain line is clogged. If you’re comfortable trying to fix it yourself, you can try clearing it with a shop vac.
- Still seeing leaks and unsure where the water may be coming from? Call the pros at North East. We’ll confirm whether it’s your HVAC or a plumbing issue and fix it ASAP.
2. Blank Thermostat
A blank thermostat can leave you feeling powerless, unable to control your home’s temperature. The first thing to check? The batteries. You’d be surprised how many service calls are solved with a quick battery swap.
If fresh batteries don’t do the trick, it could be an electrical issue in your air handler or outdoor unit.
What you can do:
- Change the batteries. If that doesn’t work, it’s time to call a professional.
3. Noises: What’s That Sound?
From whistling to banging, noisy HVAC systems were a frequent complaint in 2024. And while many noises require no further action, there are a few that may indicate the need for routine maintenance. Many outdoor unit noises are caused by dirty coils, while indoor whistling usually points to clogged filters or coils. Over time, all HVAC systems make more noise as parts wear down—just like a car.
What you can do:
- Replace dirty air filters to reduce whistling.
- Schedule regular maintenance to keep those outdoor coils clean.
- If the noise persists or worsens, let us take a look to prevent bigger problems down the line.
4. Not Cooling in the Heat of the Day: The Texas Test
San Antonio’s brutal summer heat put a lot of strain on HVAC systems this year. Though there are a variety of potential causes, when systems struggle to keep up, it’s often due to low refrigerant levels, faulty refrigerant circuit components, or deteriorated ductwork.
What you can do:
- If you notice ice on your system, that’s a big red flag. It could indicate a refrigerant issue or a clogged air filter. Check your air filter.
- Though annoying, deteriorating ducting usually isn’t urgent. It’s best to address this issue when it’s cooler outside, if possible.
- If your system consistently struggles to keep your home cool, it could mean the equipment isn’t sized properly or the thermostat is placed incorrectly. If it’s suddenly become an issue, we’d recommend having a technician evaluate the system.
5. No Heat During Cold Snaps: Heat Pumps vs. Texas Winters
San Antonio doesn’t see freezing temperatures often, but when it happens, heat pumps can struggle. Below 40°F, heat pumps rely on electric heat strips, and if those aren’t set up correctly, your home may not heat properly.
Another common call? Frozen outdoor units. While freezing is normal, the system’s defrost circuit should kick in to melt the ice. (Note: hearing a “whooshing” noise during this process is normal). If your unit stays frozen, it’s likely a defrost circuit issue.
What you can do:
- If you’re experiencing a lack of heat and notice extended ice buildup in freezing temps, call us to inspect the electric heat configuration or defrost circuit.
